Dave Fleschner is currently on tour with blues legend Tommy Castro and the Painkillers, which makes Portland shows a rare occasion these days. On August 13th, he’s home for one night only at Hōkū Events — two sets of American roots music with an all-star lineup.

You might know Alan Hager — the reigning Cascade Blues Association Muddy Award winner for Electric Guitar — as the longtime guitarist with Curtis Salgado. But before Alan hit the road with Curtis, he and Dave had a duo residency at O’Connor’s Vault, where they recorded The Hager Fleschner Duo – Live From The Vault (available at davefleschner.com). Alan also appears on Dave’s The Blues Cabaret. This show is a rare chance to hear that partnership back in action.

Also on guitar is Dave’s good friend and longtime collaborator Dan Gildea — a Portland jazz mainstay who has played with Ron Carter, Leroy Vinnegar, and Shelly Rudolph. Dan has played on a number of Dave’s records, including The Dave Fleschner Trio – Deep Cuts, At Home, and The Blues Cabaret. Two guitar masters whose very different styles lock in beautifully together.

Joining on Bass this time around is Bill Athens. Long time performing and recording collaborator with Dave, you have also heard him playing either upright or electric with Sleater-Kinney, 3 Leg Torso, Trio Subtonic, the Rose City Chamber Orchestra, the Tacoma Symphony, Seamus Blake, Dave Pietro, Bel Canto Northwest, Dan Balmer, Mel Brown, George Colligan, Nancy King, Tom Grant and many more.

Anchoring the whole thing is Edwin Coleman III, this year’s CBA Muddy Award winner for Drummer and a longtime cornerstone of Soul Vaccination. He’s the drummer Portland’s best bandleaders call first — equally at home in a Hammond jazz trio, a blues revue, or a soul band.

The setlist will move through selections from the recent vinyl release The Dave Fleschner Trio – Deep Cuts, along with material from The Blues Cabaret and Live From The Vault, plus a handful of vintage blues classics and some new tunes from Alan Hager and Dave.

Two sets. Starting at 7:00 PM. Hōkū Events on Madison
